Laboratory of Studies of Radon Exposure Effects

About Us

Exposure to Ionizing Radiation is a contingency of life, we cannot have a negative and alarmist attitude towards the effects of exposure to Natural Radioactivity, however we must not neglect the possible harmful effects.

The Laboratory of Studies of Radon Exposure Effects (LabExpoRad), located at UBIMedical in Covilhã, has as it’s  mission to promote, support and develop scientific research in the field of Ionizing Radiation, privileging and encouraging a multidisciplinary cooperation to achieve this mission.

Some of our topics of interest include the areas of Nuclear Physics, Radiation Protection, the Radioactivity Environment, the Risk Analysis applied to Nuclear Engineering, among others.

Although LabExpoRad is a research laboratory, it also provides services, such as they study of the different aspects of the population's exposure to housing radon and the resulting health risks. In order for this objective to be achieved, it is necessary to identify areas of risk, their monitoring and the subsequent implementation of mitigation measures.

Another of the valences of the laboratory is the organization of workshops and actions of divulgation of information and response to several questions related to the theme of Radon, where the following items can be highlighted:

  1. Research initiation projects with Schools and Autarchy;

  2. Public enlightenment sessions with the participation of schools, municipalities, health professionals and the media;

  3. Realization of projects sponsored by Ciência Viva - Scientific Occupation of Young People on Vacation;

  4. Dissemination activities under the Science and Technology Week;

  5. Activities in University summer camps and UBI experiences , such as:

  • Physics for the little ones

  • The biological effect of ionizing radiations

  • Ionizing Radiation Risks and Applications

  • Radon, the Silent Tenant

  • Being a Scientist Today

  • Using Radiation in Medicine

  • The Pros and Cons of Radiation

As far as teaching and research are concerned, a significant number of studies have already been carried out leading to the presentation of a series of seminar work, dissertations, one PHD thesis already concluded. At present, there are being developed several investigation works that will result in 3 PHD thesis.

It also has a Support Office whose main objective is to clarify doubts about the issue of ionizing radiation, in particular with regard to radon, mitigation measures, assistance contracted to public and private clients who need information on environmental radiological contamination.
